The Environmental Programme Support (EPS), under CDTF, is designed to supplement and complement Government efforts to reduce poverty and enhance environmental protection in Kenya. The programme is aimed at capacitating the Civil Society to influence and take part in environmental management and policy dialogue, empower the Civil Society and communities to be involved in and benefit from environmental management, and spur sustainable natural resource use through addressing local environmental problems.
To this end, the programme encourages partnerships between communities, public sector and private stake holders; supports documentation and replication of best practices and promotes advocacy and awareness to ensure that environmental projects and solutions are seen in a broader perspective.
CEF awareness/advocacy projects are projects that, through communication, demonstration and experience sharing of lessons learnt raise the understanding of how sustainable development can be achieved by addressing environmental concerns in interventions for achieving economic growth and enhanced livelihoods.
Advocacy for purpose of the CEF support intervention can simply be described as the process of identifying environmental issues of concern and lobbying policy makers to do something about them. Awareness raising refers to raising public or common knowledge or understanding about the environment and sustainable development.
The proposed project(s) must aim at supporting the following general CEF objectives:
- Promoting initiatives that integrate sound environmental management practices into the national and local development agenda
- Developing capacities of local and national level stakeholders to engage in effective management of the natural resource base, including promoting awareness creation and advocacy for sustainable development
- Supporting community driven processes that reduce poverty while promoting sound environmental management
- Supporting community process that reduce conflicts and threats to the environment
