Thematic Areas - BCP Programme
BCP funded projects were located within priority biodiversity rich areas in Kenya and were spread across 20 districts, key areas of focus included:
- Promotion of education and awareness on the value of biodiversity conservation among the general public
- Supporting biodiversity conservation-based revenue generating activities
- Encouragement of initiatives that minimize conflicts between people and biodiversity conservation
- Strengthening efforts that reduce threats to biodiversity conservation

Key Outputs from BCP-funded Projects
- 37 projects supported and Implemented through Community-based Initiatives.
- Functional tri-sectoral partnerships established between government institutions, civil society (local communities) and private sector-some of them are groundbreakers for the country
- Capacity built and profile lifted for grass-root community groups to engage in biodiversity conservation, management and governance
- Image and relationships between grass-root community groups and the wider community and government agencies significantly improved
- Reversal of trends in biodiversity and water catchments degradation in biologically rich areas, this is helping Kenya meet it’s obligations under CBD-2010 targets (significantly reducing biodiversity loss) and the Millennium Development Goals
- Contributed significantly to increased revenues from tourism through supporting community-based eco-tourism enterprises thus boosting local economies and household revenues.
- Diverse biodiversity management structures i.e. Wildlife Trusts, Association and Business Partnerships established
- Increased wildlife constituency through establishment of 22 community wildlife conservancies supported through BCP – protecting key wildlife from subdivision
- Other secondary objectives realized such as reduction of cattle rustling and conflict incidences through provision of wireless communication systems
